SḴŦOḴEȽ Hydrophone Vocals now Available!
KELȽOLEMEĆEN (Killer Whale) travelling south of SḴŦOḴEȽ. Captured by thermal imaging camera on January 12, 2025.
We are pleased to announce the first underwater audio clips from our SḴŦOḴEȽ (Mayne Island, Active Pass) hydrophone now available on our youtube page. SḴŦOḴEȽ is a busy route for Roll-On, Roll-Off Ferries in British Columbia and this hydrophone will allow us to listen to the noise pollution these ferries disperse into our traditional waters, and a popular travel passage for our relatives of the deep, KELȽOLEMEĆEN (Killer Whale).
Listen to KELȽOLEMEĆEN in their natural environment in SḴŦOḴEȽ, TIU¸IL¸ES (Tumbo Channel) and XELEXÁṮEM (Rum Island). These hydrophone recordings provide further insight into the challenges Southern Resident KELȽOLEMEĆEN face, such as unnatural commercial vessel acoustic pollution, and help us to advocate for their protection. Acoustic pollution negatively affects killer whales’ ability to communicate with their families and forage effectively and efficiently.
