Surf Scoters

In recent days and weeks our team has had the opportunity to observe a variety of marine life in our traditional waters.

We have observed many different birds from QELEṈSEN (Bald Eagles), SX̱EDJELI (Hummingbirds), Rhinoceros Auklets, rafting Surf Scoters, Harlequin X̱OEḰ (Ducks), Murrelets, MÁŦEĆ (Cormorants), and more!

In late January we observed a juvenile ḰENES (Humpback whale) resting in Swanson Channel. We alerted two large commercial vessels who altered their path to avoid this whale.

Pinnipeds are plentiful at this time in the Salish Sea and haul outs are full of EŚAS (Sea Lions). We commonly observe Stellar Sea Lions, but there are some mingling California’s, in addition to ÁSW̱ (Harbour Seals).

All photos are taken with a 200-600 zoom lens.
