Habitat Monitoring

To monitor salmon population abundance, health, and environmental factors and increase understanding to ensure SRKWs have access to prey.

What is the Purpose of Habitat Monitoring?

Salmon Stream Monitoring

  • Monitoring salmon biology and abundance, environmental factors, and human factors that influence salmon conservation.

  • Collaborate with Goldstream Volunteer Salmonid Enhancement Society and expand the scope of activities

Drone

  • Using drones to record physical changes in Goldstream over time and to assist with manual fish counts

Stream Walks

  • Water quality sampling to measure changes in temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and pH while recording physical stream properties

  • Walking the stream with tally counters to record the number of live and dead salmon

Goldstream Hatchery

  • Weekly work at the Goldstream Hatchery to assist in fin clipping, egg counting, feeding, salmon fry outplanting, and debris removal

Chinook salmon are the primary source of nutrition and calories for SKRWs and Herring is the primary food source for Salmon.

Salmon Habitat/Estuary Enhancement

  • Will depend on the results of the monitoring program. Examples include the removal of fish barriers, the removal of invasive species, and educating the general public on salmon habitat sensitivity.
