What is the Purpose of Habitat Monitoring?
Salmon Stream Monitoring
Monitoring salmon biology and abundance, environmental factors, and human factors that influence salmon conservation.
Collaborate with Goldstream Volunteer Salmonid Enhancement Society and expand the scope of activities
Drone
Using drones to record physical changes in Goldstream over time and to assist with manual fish counts
Stream Walks
Water quality sampling to measure changes in temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and pH while recording physical stream properties
Walking the stream with tally counters to record the number of live and dead salmon
Goldstream Hatchery
Weekly work at the Goldstream Hatchery to assist in fin clipping, egg counting, feeding, salmon fry outplanting, and debris removal
Chinook salmon are the primary source of nutrition and calories for SKRWs and Herring is the primary food source for Salmon.
Salmon Habitat/Estuary Enhancement
Will depend on the results of the monitoring program. Examples include the removal of fish barriers, the removal of invasive species, and educating the general public on salmon habitat sensitivity.
